Global Environmental Education Partnership Meeting held in Lexington, Kentucky

A Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP) Meeting was held from October 14 to 18 in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. A total of 38 experts and scholars from 14 countries attended the meeting, namely: Australia, Botswana, Canada, Denmark, Finland, India, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, the US and Taiwan.

The participants reached a consensus to strengthen GEEP’s diversified communication network, building a model of international cooperation and environmental education based on GEEP, and considering how to contact and reach more ethnic groups.

2019 International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant

The 2019 International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (ICMGP) was held in Poland from September 8 to 13, 2019. The ICMGP is held every two years, and is one of the largest conferences on mercury pollution problems.
The topics at the 2019 ICMGP included: the Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network for atmospheric mercury transportation and deposition in the region; the current status of the Minamata Convention on Mercury and scientific assessment; using advanced technologies to reduce mercury pollution emissions; mercury cycling in the ecosystem; and analysis technologies for mercury compounds.

2019 Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network Partners Meeting

The Taiwan EPA, with the collaboration from the US EPA and the Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, held the 8th Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network (APMMN) Workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia from Aug. 14 to 16. The Taiwan EPA delegation was led by Mr. Yeuh-bin Wang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Environmental Monitoring and Information Management. During the opening ceremony, Mr. Wang thanked the US EPA for their past support on mercury monitoring and looked forward to future collaboration. Furthermore, Mr. Wang also encouraged other partner countries to join the network and create a wider scope of mercury monitoring in the Asia-Pacific region.

The three-day annual event included status update on mercury monitoring in the partner countries and strategic planning of the APMMN’s future goal. The meeting concluded with a site visit to one of Indonesian’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining, which releases a tremendous amount of mercury into the atmosphere, as well as a mercury monitoring laboratory.

This year, the event also included a workshop held by the Ministry of Environment of Japan on atmospheric mercury monitoring. It is the second time MOEJ has held the workshop in conjunction with the APMMN meeting.

2019 International Chemical and Mercury Management Conference held in Taipei

The Taiwan EPA held the 2019 International Chemical and Mercury Management Conference in Taipei from August 7 to 8, 2019. During the two-day event, Taiwan showcased its determination and effort to participate in the Minamata Convention, through its active implementation of risk controls and measures to ban mercury-containing products. The discussions that took place during the event brought forth new information and outlooks on the current development of international chemical management policies, corporate social responsibility, personnel training and environmental sustainability.

2019 South & Southeast Asia-Air Improvements in the Region meeting held in Taiwan

Under the New Southbound Policy, the Taiwan EPA and the US EPA held the 2019 South & Southeast Asia-Air Improvements in the Region (SSEA-AIR) symposium in Taipei from July 29 to August 2. More than 30 experts and government officials from six countries – Indonesia, Mongolia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam – and two international organizations, the Asia Development Bank and the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN), were invited to share their experiences on air pollution management.

The symposium participants not only thoroughly exchanged their views on air quality strategies, but also focused on key issues for Southeast Asian countries, such as funding sources for improving air quality, management of mobile source air pollution, and industrial air pollution control equipment. Furthermore, a site visit was conducted to give participants a better first hand understanding of Taiwan’s various technical achievements and efforts in air pollution control.

GEEP Advisory Group Meeting held in Malaysia

The 2019 Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP) Advisory Group Meeting was held from July 25 to 26 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Approximately 31 environmental education experts, both governmental and non-governmental, from 10 countries were invited to discuss how to connect environmental education resources and expand environmental education capacities in the Asia-Pacific region.

The GEEP expects to host a regional environmental education forum in 2020, to strengthen the Asia-Pacific as a regional network pioneer. The goal of the forum will be to learn from other countries, share Taiwan’s experience, and improve environmental education quality.

2019 Atmospheric Mercury Monitoring Training Workshop

Date: June 10-14, 2019

The 2019 Atmospheric Mercury Monitoring Training Workshop was held at National Central University in Taiwan from June 10-14. Nine participants from Fiji, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam were invited to attend the workshop.

The theme of the workshop covered atmospheric mercury wet deposition sampling methods, methods of sampling artifacts with atmospheric mercury, ultra-micro mercury analysis, data processing, data quality assurance and control, and automatic atmospheric mercury analysis technologies.

2019 IEP Environmental Training Workshop – Vietnam

In collaboration with the US EPA, the Taiwan EPA’s Bureau of Environmental Inspection conducted a five-day training workshop from 5/20 to 5/24 on environmental impact assessment, extended producer’s responsibility, and waste permitting and management for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam. The goal of the workshop was to share Taiwan’s expertise and experience with Vietnam and allow Taiwan to understand Vietnam’s current situation regarding the workshop topics. During the opening ceremony, Taiwan EPA Minister Chang Tzi-Chin greeted the delegation from the US EPA and Vietnam MONRE, and warmly welcomed the group. In addition to the training, the entire delegation also visited a waste incineration plant and EIA sites to learn about Taiwan’s experiences firsthand.

US-Taiwan Eco-Campus Partnership Program – Award Ceremony

The US-Taiwan Eco-Campus Award Ceremony was held at Wu Feng Elementary School in Taichung on December 11, 2018. The event was hosted by the Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan, and invited honorable guest Mr. John (Jack) Guan-Murry from the US Environmental Protection Agency to award eco-campus green flags schools. In total, more than 140 participants from the eco-campus schools and the Environmental Protection Bureaus participated in this big celebration of the year. This year, 86 schools from around the country came to receive the awards, including 7 Green Flags, 26 Silver, and 53 Bronze.

In addition, 4 schools from around the central region were invited to use this great opportunity to showcase their outstanding achievements when they incorporated the seven steps of becoming a more sustainable and eco-friendly campus. The ceremony also provided a platform for the Green Flag and Silver Award schools to share their best practice and valuable lessons.

Taiwan Partnered with US and Philippines to Promote Environmentally Sound Management of Electronic Waste

The Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration partnered with US Environmental Protection Agency to sponsor the 2018 International E-Waste Management Network Workshop in Manila from September 24 to 28. The event, hosted by Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), invited participants from over 17 countries to discuss about policies, new technologies and best practices for e-waste management. The first day of the workshop was dedicated to the Philippines and designated as Philippines’ Day, which focused entirely on e-waste situation in the Philippines. One of the key themes this year was the involvement of the industry and private sector in order to complete circular economy of e-waste. The participants also visited Semirecycling Co., Inc, a local precious metal recycling plant, to learn about its e-waste recycling program and worker’s health and safety practices.

Through the workshop, participants were able to learn how to build capacity of government officials to develop and implement comprehensive program for the collection, recycling, and reuse of e-waste, and identify effective ways to establish relationships with industry and private sector.
